Hero builders step in after scammers strike

A long-running Bracknell building firm has fixed an elderly couple’s roof for free after scammers claiming to be from the company swindled £44,000 from them for a “two-hour job”. The conmen claimed to be working for Goss and Sons, based in Quintilis in Great Hollands, and targeted the elderly couple at their home in Bagshot, Surrey. They charged the couple £44,000 for a week of repairs to their roof which were not carried out and even made the 86-year-old man go to the bank to draw out money to pay them. On Thursday, Steve Goss, owner of Goss and Sons, went to see the couple and carried out the repairs to their roof for free. He said he was disgusted to have his company name associated with conmen and hoped the police would catch and punish them. He said: “It’s a shameful thing to do to two elderly people. “They were making the man go to the bank and take out £7,000 to pay for this work that didn’t need doing.” The bank eventually contacted the police after becoming suspicious but the conmen have yet to be caught.Steve added: “It was only right to go and do the work for them after that. “I did it on Thursday morning, it was no more than a two-hour job. “If I was charging, I’d say it would have been no more than £200. “It’s a shameful thing to do, especially as one of them is suffering from Alzheimer’s. ”Steve’s father started Goss and Sons in Sandhurst in 1966 and Steve now runs the business with his three sons. He added: “This makes my company look bad and I would very much like to see the people caught and punished.” DC Stuart Pittaway of Surrey Police said: “Goss and Sons was not involved in the offence in which fraudsters merely draped a plastic sheet over the roof of the victim’s home.

“It is extremely generous of Mr Goss to undertake the roofing work and demonstrates his caring and professional approach to business.”

The scam happened between Friday, November 5, and Monday, November 12.
